All Keys Lost Car Key Programming

All keys lost is the job most locksmiths quietly decline and most owners are told is dealer-only. It is neither. It is the work we are set up for.

With no working key present, a key cannot simply be copied. It has to be originated: the correct blade cut from the vehicle's own key code, and the immobiliser taught to accept a key it has never seen. On many modern vehicles that means reading security data directly from a control module rather than through the diagnostic port.

Module-level programming

Some manufacturers protect the immobiliser data well enough that no amount of plugging into the OBD port will produce a key. On those vehicles the module itself has to come out, be read on the bench, and go back in. BMW's FEM and BDC modules and the earlier CAS units are the ones we handle most often, and Rolls-Royce models built under BMW ownership use closely related architecture.

This is genuinely specialist work. It involves opening a control module, connecting to it directly, and knowing what to do with what comes back. Most mobile locksmiths do not own the equipment and would not attempt it. It is the reason dealers and used-car lots call us rather than the other way round.

What it means for you

No tow — the vehicle stays where it is and we come to it
No dealer appointment and no waiting for a slot
A working key, plus the option of a spare cut in the same visit while the car is open to us
Lost or stolen keys erased from the vehicle's memory so they can no longer start it

Be prepared for a longer job

We will not pretend this is the same as cutting a spare. Originating a key and teaching an immobiliser takes real time, and module-level work takes longer still. What we will do is tell you honestly what is involved before we start, and quote it before we are dispatched rather than after we arrive.

Ownership verification is strict here

Producing a working key for a vehicle with no key present is exactly the capability a thief would want. Title or registration plus photo identification, every time, no exceptions. If that seems inconvenient, it is worth remembering it is the same rule protecting your car from someone else.

My dealer says the car must be towed in. Is that true?

Usually not. We originate keys and program immobilisers at the vehicle, including cases requiring module work, which removes the tow entirely.

What is module programming and why does my car need it?

On some vehicles the immobiliser data cannot be reached through the diagnostic port. The control module has to be accessed directly and read on the bench. It is more involved than standard programming, and it is what makes an all-keys-lost job possible on those models.

Can you erase keys that were stolen?

Yes, and you should have it done. Removing the old keys from the vehicle's memory means they will no longer start the car even if someone still has them.
