Comfort access is the BMW feature that unlocks the car as you approach and starts it without the key leaving your pocket. When it stops working, the cause is often smaller than owners assume.
Check these before booking anything
- Battery — comfort access keys drain faster than plain remotes because they are constantly listening
- One key or both — if both stopped, the fault is likely in the car rather than the keys
- Water damage — these keys go through weather on a keyring that the electronics were not designed for
- The emergency blade — hidden in the fob body, it opens the door but will not start the car
If the car will not detect the key at all, most BMWs let you hold the fob against a specific point on the steering column or start button so the vehicle can read it directly. Worth knowing where yours is before you need it.
Adding a spare versus replacing a lost key
Adding a key while an existing one works is the straightforward version. Replacing a lost one means the missing key should also be erased from the vehicle, so it can no longer start the car. If the key was stolen rather than mislaid, that step is not optional — tell us which it was.
Display keys
The touchscreen display key fitted to some 7 Series and later models is its own proposition, both in cost and in what is involved. If that is what you have lost, say so when you call so we bring the right part rather than discovering it at the car.
My BMW comfort access stopped working. Does the key need replacing?
Not necessarily. Battery, moisture or a synchronisation fault are all more common than a failed key. If both your keys stopped working, the problem is in the vehicle.
Is there an emergency key inside the fob?
Yes. Most BMW fobs contain a mechanical blade that releases from the body. It opens the door but will not start the engine.
Can you replace a BMW display key?
Yes, though it is a different part and a different cost to a standard comfort access key. Mention it when you call so we arrive with the right one.
